SPRINGER BIKE BUS
A bike bus is created when parents and kids bike to school together, picking up other riders along the way on a predetermined route. It's a fun way to get to school that's not only good for the body but good for the mind! At Springer, our first bike bus, which starts north of school at the east end Hollingsworth Drive, will ride on the March WoW! Day (March 6th) and on each WoW! Day through the end of the year.
Here's how to get ready for and join the bike bus.
Preparing ahead
Check the route map and timetable a few days before the bike bus
Pick a place along the route and near your house where you plan to meet the bike bus. (It doesn't have to be at the timed spots, anywhere along the marked route is fine).
The bike bus will travel on the right-hand side of the street in the direction of school, so plan to wait on the right-hand side of the street that you'll meet the bike bus on.
No need to register, just show up to ride on March 6th.
Meeting the bike bus
Put on your helmet (it's the law), get on your bike, and come to the spot on the right-hand side of the street where you'll meet the bike bus.
Wait off of the street--on the sidewalk, in a driveway or in a gravel parking area.
Arrive a few minutes early, so you can relax. If others are waiting at the same spot, introduce yourself and strike up a conversation.
Look down the street in the direction the bike bus will travel so you know when it's coming.
When you see the bike bus coming, stay in place until the leaders have passed, then join the bus in the middle or near the end, but before the final guide or "sweeper."
Do not pass the leader and keep space between you and other riders to avoid a crash.
Always have your eyes and ears open. Look ahead and listen for commands from the leaders to stop, move to the right, or bunch up before crossing a street.
On arrival, walk your bike to the parking area and lock it up. Join the after party and check in at the WoW table.
